Reboot Your Life With A Juice Fast!

On Monday of this week I started a juice fast based on a documentary I recently watched called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. I put an invitation out to my Life Essentials team members and to all of my patients to join me in a 10-day juice fast to help “reboot” our lives. No matter where you are at in your health journey, juicing has incredible health benefits for absolutely every one of us.

Here are just some of the many documented nutritional benefits of juicing:

  • Boosts the number of fruit/vegetable servings you can ingest in a day
  • Breaks the cycle of unhealthy eating
  • Retrains your brain to crave fruits and vegetables
  • Manages your weight
  • Promotes a lifestyle that will lower risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, macular degeneration, cognitive decline and mental illness including depression
  • Promotes longevity
  • Decreases aches and pains in joints and muscles
  • Improves your immunity
  • Promotes increased energy levels
  • Promotes healthy skin, nails and hair
  • Gains greater access to digestive enzymes locked away in whole produce through juicing

And here are some “simple facts” you may not be aware of, as listed on the Reboot Your Life website:

Simple Fact #1:

Complex foods can be grouped into two major categories: foods that are high in macronutrients and foods that are high in micronutrients. Macronutrients are elements like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that we need, but should not consume in excess. Micronutrients include all vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. These are found in abundance in all plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, spices, herbs, and teas.

Simple Fact #2:

There are 170 phytonutrients in just one orange. To date, there are thousands of micronutrient phytonutrients that have been identified in plants, such as carotenes, antioxidants, and flavonoids. Often we hear that the vitamin C in an orange is responsible for its immune-boosting properties, but there are actually over 170 known phytonutrients in just one orange. The power of fruits and vegetables is bigger than we know.

Simple Fact #3:

A healthy diet full of micronutrients, coupled with physical activity, not smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight, reduces risk for cardiovascular disease, strokes, diabetes, certain types of cancers, mental illness, metabolic syndrome, and helps us live longer lives. A micronutrient-rich lifestyle can also reduce the severity of these conditions in those who already have developed them, meaning less medication and less side effects.

Simple Fact #4:

When eating fruits and vegetables that our bodies have seen for thousands of years, the digestive/immune response is milder than the response to eating heavily processed foods. Being constantly challenged by “foreign” processed foods will wear out the immune system over time, making us more vulnerable to disease and infection as we age.

Meet Joe Cross:  100 lbs overweight and loaded up on medications for a debilitating autoimmune disease.  After doing everything that conventional medicine had to offer, Joe turned to his only option left…. to get his body to heal itself without drugs.  Through his journey, Joe lost over 100 lbs., got off all his meds, and discovered the joy of true health and healing with one simple principle: eating GOD-made fruits and vegetables through juicing.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?  Do you want to eliminate your chronic disease?  Are you ready to be in the best shape of your life?  Give your body the chance to heal itself!

Hello Dr. Brian,
I checked out the reboot website and really liked their program. I couldn’t find the info for the actual juice fast you were talking about though…anyway…I’ve been making the delicious juice recipes they have on their website and I just truly enjoy them, even my kids like them and my 10 year old Lauren is coming out with her own recipes. I’ve been using my bullet express machine and is working fine but I would like to find a machine that uses all the product instead of just juicing. Do you reccomend any other brand? I check the ones on their website but they have many options. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I like a type of a blender so that no product is wasted. Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Carolina,

What I am doing is Day 6-10 on the Standard Reboot Program, and then repeating that for a total of a 10-day juice fast. That’s great to hear about your kids enjoying the juices too, it truly is something that the whole family can participate in! The benefit of juicing vs. making smoothies is that juicing extracts more of the micronutrients in fruits and vegetables and makes them more readily available for absorption by the body. Green smoothies are beneficial to your health as well, but they do require a greater deal of digestion when compared to juicing. Another thing to consider is the high heat used in most blenders to get the consistency you need. When the fruits and vegetables come into contact with the heated blades spinning at those high speeds, some of those all-important nutrients are inevitably lost in the process. Most economy juicers use high heat in the juicing process as well, so it is better to get a low-speed “masticating” juicer as opposed to a high-speed “centrifugal” juicer. (An example of a “centrifugal” juicer is the Breville Juice Fountain Plus, and an example of a “masticating” juicer is the Omega 8003 Nutrition Center Juicer). Ideally it’s great to have a juicer AND a blender so you can find that perfect combination of juicing and blending that’s just right for you. As far as blender types, Vitamix is definitely the way to go.

above you say “That’s great to hear about your kids enjoying the juices too, it truly is something that the whole family can participate in!” Is it safe for kids to do? My son is sixteen-years-old and 6′6″, but sadly with the height also came weight issues. My son also has an aortic-biscuspid. His cardiologist has strongly suggested he lose weight. We watched Joe’s story (fat sick and dying) last night and my son excitedly said ” THAT IT!!! I WANT TO DO THAT TOO!!! Mom, thats it, thats how I can lose weight”. He currently weighs 325 pounds and I can see it taking a toll on his whole dispostion and outlook. I can see he’s getting depressed. He works out at the local gym, but in all honestly he doesn’t know what he’s doing. When I try and encourage cardio he says mom, guys don’t do cardio, they do weights. His father is a diabetic, who is fine with taking every pill the doctor shoves his way, he eats what he wants, how much he want and when he wants. My husband is maybe 20 pounds overweight. My son tries to keep up with how much his dad can eat, but gets discouraged and says how come Dad can eat whatever he wants and he doesn’t get fat, but I do??? I’ve pleaded and pleaded with husband since my son started unhealthy eating habbits to please stop the chips, donuts, sodas, processed food, take out food, but my husband feels like he’s doing a good thing when he “rewards” our kids with food. Now our daughter who is 11 is about 50 pounds overweight. My husband doesn’t want to see it though. Any further insight you can give me to help my kids would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paula,
I am sorry to hear of your childrens’ current health conditions. The system of rewarding with bad foods loading with sugars, preservatives, colorings and additives is no reward at all. This is contributing to not only the weight issues but places both children on the fast track to diabetes. The juice fast is healthy and safe for your children to do. This will allow the body to be detoxed from all the toxins that are already in there and while on fast will allow no future toxins to come into the body. As a follow up to the juice fast (depending on length of time your son/daughter decide to do it for…I recommend 10day), will want them following up with healthy alternatives to the poor foods that they are currently eating to allow the weight and toxins not to pile right back on.
If you would like to tell me where you live (city, state) I can get you information on the best place to go to get consultation and recommendations for your family.

Hey Everyone,
I have been trying to get recipes to started on my Reboot, but was not able to get any recipes from the Fast, Sick and nearly dead web site and I was not able to sign up either, if that was required to obtain the recipes. Can anyone direct me to a web site that has the recipes? Thanks

Meredith Hardesty April 30, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to access the Reboot your life website and am not able to get on. The website seems like it has been having problems (for a while now). It is so discouraging and frustrating when you are motivated to start this juicing diet but can’t start because of the website problems. Anyway, if anyone would be willing to send me All the recipes to the 10 day plan I would really appreciate it. My email is mrhardesty@earthlink.net
Thanks!

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your comment. It is best to use organic fruits and vegetables due to the non-regulation of the non-organic foods in any country. Washing will only remove some of surface load but most has been there for a long time and seeped in much further.

Hi everyone,
I have not been able to get on the website either, but while at college I discovered “naked juice.” While I’m not sure if these bottles of juice are completely natural, they do have recipes on the back, and on the website. Here is the URL http://nakedjuice.com, I got hooked on the pomegranate blueberry one at college, and it inspired me to try to make my own. I then saw Joe Cross’s film on hulu and am really hoping they fix the website soon so we can all join in!
